SAN FRANCISCO - YIMBY Action issued the following statement today regarding the approval of the Family Zoning Plan. The Family Zoning Plan is an effort to allow more homes so that San Francisco can become an affordable place for future generations to live, and to bring the city’s housing plan into compliance with state law:
“The Family Zoning Plan makes it easier to build housing in neighborhoods across the city, bringing us closer to a San Francisco where families and working people can afford to live here," said Jane Natoli, San Francisco Organizing Director of YIMBY Action. “We celebrate that this is the largest step forward our city has taken to increase housing in high opportunity neighborhoods, perhaps ever. And yet we also recognize that it is likely insufficient under the law, and doesn’t meet the full breadth of need in our community."
YIMBY Action has consistently advocated for zoning reforms that expand housing opportunities citywide, including in areas that have long limited multifamily homes. While the Family Zoning Plan––as outlined in a report from San Francisco’s City Economist, Ted Egan–– is not the full structural overhaul needed to meet San Francisco’s housing obligations, it reflects progress made through sustained community engagement and months of advocacy to strengthen the proposal.
YIMBY Action will continue working with partners, community members, and city leaders to ensure that San Francisco implements policies that deliver the homes residents need and advances long-term changes that address the scale of the housing shortage.
