The Yimby Party
Code of Conduct
This is a living document that describes how we're building the Yimby Party coalition. It is a guideline for all our members and membership organizations. This should help all members of the community understand how to be upstanding members of said community.
The following code of conduct applies within our community:
The Yimby Party is a supportive, safe, welcoming environment for all, regardless of level of political involvement, gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, personal appearance, body size, race, ethnicity, age, religion, nationality, or other characteristic.
Please avoid using language that might detract from a supportive, safe, and welcoming environment for all.
Please be kind and courteous to each other. No personal attacks. There's no need to be mean or rude.
Political debate is greatly encouraged and part of how we develop. Be respectful, use healthy forms of discourse, and be open to new ideas. This isn't a science, although we love science.
Respect that people have differences of opinion and that every decision carries a trade-off and numerous costs. There is seldom a right answer, especially in political activism.
The Yimby coalition is a broad community with wide ranging political views. We hope everyone understands that they may meet people who see the world and the role of government very differently than they do. Because politics is personal, we believe respect is critical to maintaining an inviting and politically active community.
As a political movement, we also need cohesion of vision. While healthy debate is essential to progress, disruption and co-option is counterproductive and harmful. Please keep unstructured critique to a minimum. If you have solid ideas you want to experiment with, be prepared to do the work yourself.
We will exclude you from interaction if you insult, demean, or harass anyone. That is not welcome behavior. In particular, we don't tolerate behavior that excludes people in socially marginalized groups.
Private harassment is also unacceptable. No matter who you are, if you feel you have been or are being harassed or made uncomfortable by a community member, please contact Yimby staff. Whether you're a regular contributor or newcomer, we care about making this community a safe place for you and we've got your back.
Likewise any spamming, trolling, flaming, baiting, or other attention-stealing behavior is not welcome.
Remarks that violate The Yimby Party Code of Conduct, including hateful, hurtful, oppressive, or exclusionary remarks, are not allowed. Cursing is allowed but never targeting another member and never in a hateful manner.
Remarks that are found inappropriate, whether listed in this CoC or not, are also not allowed. We will first respond to such remarks with a warning. If the warning is unheeded, the person will be asked to step away from The Yimby Party to cool off. If they come back and continue to make trouble, they will be banned i.e., indefinitely excluded. We may choose at its discretion to un-ban the person if it was a first offense and they offer the offended party a genuine apology.
If The Yimby Party bans someone and you think it was unjustified, we encourage you to take it up with a Yimby Party staff member in private.
Staff members are held to a higher standard than other community members. If a staff member creates an inappropriate situation, they should expect less leeway than others.
